                                      REVENGE

Revenge is a kind of wild justice, which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out. Certainly in taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy, but in passing it over he is superior, for it is a prince's part to pardon. It is the glory of a man to pass by an offence.That which is past is gone and irrevocable and wise men have enough to do with things present and to come; therefore they do but trifle with themselves, that labour in past matters. There is no man who does a wrong for the wrong's sake, but thereby to purchase himself profit, or pleasure, or honour of the like. And if any man should do wrong merely out of ill nature, it is but like the thorn or briar, which prick and scratch because they can do no other. The most tolerable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there is no law to remedy; but then, let a man take heed the revenge be such as there is no law to punish; else a man's enemy is still before hand, and it is two for one.

                                 प्रतिशोध

प्रतिशोध एक प्रकार का जंगली न्याय है, जैसे जैसे मनुष्य प्रतिशोध की ओर प्रवर्त हो, वैसे वैसे कानून को भी इसके विनाश की ओर प्रवर्त होना  चाहिए। नि:सन्देह,  प्रतिशोधी व्यक्ति अपने शत्रु के ही समान हो जाता है अर्थात उसमें और उसके शत्रु में कोई अंतर नही रह जाता है, लेकिन उसे क्षमा करने पर वह श्रेष्ठ बन जाता है, क्योंकि क्षमा करना एक राजकुल के व्यक्ति की शोभा है। किसी के  अपराध को  क्षमा करना व्यक्ति का श्रेष्ठ गुण है। जो बीत गया सो बीत गया और उसे दोबारा वापस नहीं लाया जा सकता इसलिए बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति अपना  सारा समय वर्तमान एवं भविष्य के कार्यकर्मों में लगाते हैं वें अतीत के व्यर्थ  मामलों पर अधिक परिश्रम नहीं करते हैं।  ऐसा कोई व्यक्ति नहीं है जो सिर्फ बुराई के लिए बुराई करता है, वह ऐसा करता है तो सिर्फ व्यक्तिगत लाभ, प्रसन्नता या नाम के लिए । और अगर कोई  व्यक्ति  केवल अपने बुरे स्वभाव के वशीभूत होकर बुराई करता है,  तो  वह उस  कांटे अथवा कंटीली झाड़ी की तरह है, जो दूसरों के पैरों में चुभते हैं  और दूसरों को खरोंच पहुंचाते हैं क्योंकि वें इसके अलावा और कुछ कर ही नहीं सकते हैं। सर्वाधिक संतोषजनक प्रकार का बदला उन अपराधों के लिए होता है जिनका  शमन करने के लिए कोई कानून नहीं है; व्यक्ति इस बात का ध्यान अवश्य  रखे कि  उस प्रतिशोध के लिए कानून में किसी दण्ड का प्रावधान न हो अन्यथा उसका शत्रु लाभ की स्थिति में रहेगा और प्रतिशोध लेने वाले को दोहरी क्षति होगी।
